Charlotte is set to host a motorcycle race in 2016, with the MXGP World Championship set to run at ZMAX Dragway, Sept. 2-3, 2016.

The event was formally announced last night, featuring motocross legend Jeremy McGrath and SMI CEO Marcus Smith, among others.

The dirt race course will take up all four lanes of ZMAX Dragway, as the track that hosts a round of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series converts into this new type format.

“At Speedway Motorsports, Inc., we are always committed to bringing world-class events to our facilities, and there is no bigger motocross event in the world than the Monster Energy MXGP of the Americas,” Smith said in a release.

“Youthstream, the owner of MXGP, is an excellent partner with a grand vision. Not only will we have an opportunity to host competitors and fans from three continents and 16 countries, we’ll be able to showcase our facility and Charlotte on the world stage with the Monster Energy MXGP of the Americas.”

More information on the event can be found here, via the MXGP website. A link to the event via the CMS website is here.

The MXGP of the Americas confirmation followed after an earlier Sports Business Daily report, which incorrectly identified MXGP as the MotoGP World Championship. The reporter issued a correction and an apology for the error.

MotoGP’s round at Circuit of The Americas, set for April 8-10, continues as planned, a track spokesperson confirmed to MotorSportsTalk.
