Amir Johnson started at center on Sunday, posting 12 points (6-of-7 FGs), six rebounds and two assists, and he shifted Aaron Gray to the bench in the process.
Dwane Casey’s rotations are wobbly and this could have been a matchup-based change, since the Bucks feature smallish Drew Gooden at center. Either way, Amir is a low-end fantasy option and Gray doesn’t deserve to be owned in average formats.
  • DET Center #34
Aaron Gray double-doubled against Dwight Howard and the Magic on Monday, scoring 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting with 11 rebounds and a steal in 23 minutes.
Gray has played better than anybody would have imagined before the year and he looks like he has shed a few pounds. That said, he’s still only averaging 7.7 points, 6.5 boards, and 0.7 blocks per game over his last six contests, making him a deep-league option at best.
  • IND Power Forward #16
James Johnson will return to the starting lineup for Monday’s game against the Bucks.
Aaron Gray gets the demotion. Steamers looking for defensive stats should note that Johnson has averaged 10.4 points, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals in his 38 starts this season.
  • DET Center #34
Aaron Gray had season highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds in Wednesday’s start, and also had two blocks in a win over the Pistons.
If you somehow had him in your lineup tonight, congratulations. Gray had totaled just 10 points over his last four games, and no more than seven boards in any of those, so this looks more like a fluke than anything else.
  • Power Forward #5
Amir Johnson started the second half of Sunday’s game for Andrea Bargnani, who left earlier with another calf injury.
Johnson finished with just eight points and one rebound in 15 minutes, but could be worth a look if Bargnani’s injury keeps him out going forward. Aaron Gray, who was already starting, is also going to see a boost in minutes, and had four points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes tonight.
  • DET Center #34
Aaron Gray scored five points on 2-of-5 shooting with four rebounds and two blocks in 24 minutes on Monday, and also dealt with a right ankle injury mid-way through the game.
Gray stayed in the game, but if the injury becomes problematic it could help the causes of Amir Johnson and Ed Davis. If anything else comes of it we’ll let you know.
  • Power Forward #5
Amir Johnson came off the bench behind Aaron Gray on Friday for matchup purposes, but the plan didn’t work, as Marc Gasol torched the Raptors for a season-high 28 points.
Johnson had just nine points, five rebounds, a steal and a block in the win, but should return to the starting lineup soon. Do not drop him for Gray.
  • DET Center #34
Aaron Gray will start over Amir Johnson on Friday against Tyson Chandler and the Knicks.
The Raptors often start Gray over Johnson against bigger physical centers and Chandler certainly fits that bill. They also made this change last Friday when they took on Marc Gasol and the Grizzlies. This shouldn’t affect Amir Johnson’s value in the long term.
  • DET Center #34
Aaron Gray (back) will not play in Thursday’s finale.
Even though Jamaal Magloire will start, Amir Johnson, James Johnson and Ed Davis figure to play a ton of minutes up front as the Raptors wrap up the season. Gray heads into free agency as a mere big body that has never topped 4.3 points per game in a season.
  • BKN Center #9
Andrea Bargnani is targeting a return to action on Sunday against the Bucks.
He’s missed 20 games with a calf injury, but coach Dwane Casey indicated after Wednesday’s game that he is hoping that Bargnani can play on Sunday. The Raptors may limit his minutes for a week, but the good news is that he’s very close to being back in the lineup. Amir Johnson and Aaron Gray are likely to take the biggest minutes hit in his return.
