Cavaliers signed swingman Ira Newble, who had been with the Hawks, to a four-year, $12.3 million contract.

The contract includes a player option for a fifth season. The defensive-minded Newble averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 rebounds in 73 games last season. He’ll probably play about 25 minutes per game as a reserve for Cleveland.

Newble has also done as fine a job defending Kobe Bryant as anyone else this season. In two games against Atlanta, Kobe has shot 8-for-22 and 3-for-9, mostly with Newble on him.

He also had three steals and is starting to show some fantasy promise. Of course, most of the Cavs stars were sitting at the end of this blowout win over Portland, meaning that some of the “little guys” got more action.
