Warriors extend Jerry West’s contract

A couple weeks ago, Klay Thompson’s father laid down his version of why his son wasn’t traded for Kevin Love:

Warriors owner Joe Lacob and general manager Bob Myers wanted to do it.

Board member Jerry West and coach Steve Kerr didn’t.

Myers just got a contract extension, perhaps indicating his voice will carry more weight going forward. Of course, Lacob gets final say, but he can empower the people of his choosing.

And as the picture becomes clear, Lacob wants more healthy debate.

Warriors executive board member Jerry West has agreed to a two-year extension with the team through the 2016-2017 season, an NBA source confirmed to this newspaper on Wednesday.

West had one year remaining on his original deal with the team and this new deal will be tacked on, for a total of a three-year commitment from this point.

I like how the Warriors have remade their roster in recent years, assembling one of the NBA’s best starting lineups (Stephen Curry, Thompson, Andre Iguodala, David Lee and Andrew Bogut) and keeping the bench stocked with a couple intriguing young forwards (Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes). The Myers-West partnership appears to be working.

It’s unclear how much longer West, 76, will keep at it. Kawakami reports The Logo was considering retirement.

But West sticking in Golden State is good news for Thompson, whom the Warriors drafted at West’s urging. With Thompson eligible for a contract extension, the odds of a max deal just improved.
