Victor Wembanyama fever has not cooled down.
The jersey Victor Wembanyama wore in his NBA debut on Oct. 25 against the Dallas Mavericks sold at auction for $762,000. That was far higher than the $80,000-$120,000 that Sothebys expected the jersey to fetch.
Wembanyama finished his debut game with 15 points and five rebounds, and he wore this jersey for the second half of that game (an eventual Spurs loss to the Mavericks).
Since then, Wembanyama has gone on to have an impressive rookie campaign averaging 18.6 points and 9.1 rebounds a night, with 2.6 blocks a game. His efficiency is a work in progress (he’s got a below-average 50.9 true shooting percentage) but considering he has the Jeremy Sochan experiment at point guard setting him up, and the Spurs trying a number of different things to expose Wembanyama to different looks, San Antonio couldn’t have asked for more so far this season.
And one collector has bet big that when Wembanyama fulfills his promise that opening night jersey will be worth a lot more than three-quarters of a million dollars.
