Dolphins hired Charlie Frye as quarterbacks coach.
Frye was Tua Tagovailoa’s coach at the Elite 11 competition for top high school quarterbacks. His hiring is another indication the Dolphins are going all in on Tua as a franchise QB. NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks said on Twitter that Frye “has great chemistry with [Tua] and understands how to craft plays around his skills.” A 2005 third-round NFL draft selection by the Browns who later played for the Seahawks and Raiders, Frye has served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Central Michigan since 2019. He’ll replace recently fired Robby Brown as Miami’s QB coach. Frye will be charged with developing Tagovailoa, who struggled mightily through large swaths of his rookie campaign.

Charlie Frye has re-inserted himself into contention for Cleveland’s backup job with a strong training camp.
Maybe Doug Johnson’s signing light a fire in him. He had an excellent scrimmage Saturday night, making plays with his legs and arm.

The Raiders are expected to host free agent QB Charlie Frye and OT Ray Willis on Tuesday.
Frye is one of the few potential backup quarterbacks who would not be an upgrade on Andrew Walter.

Raiders signed QB Kyle Boller, formerly of the Rams, to an undisclosed contract.
Boller is a local product, playing his college ball nearby at Cal. He also has a history with new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson from their time together in Baltimore. We’d like to say that Boller has no shot to start, but when the competition is Bruce Gradkowski and JaMarcus Russell, it’s entirely possible. Charlie Frye’s roster spot could be in jeopardy.

Raiders signed QB Charlie Frye, formerly of the Seahawks.
Frye, 28, couldn’t beat out Seneca Wallace to be Seattle’s backup last year. He’ll compete with Bruce Gradkowski and Andrew Walter behind JaMarcus Russell and Jeff Garcia in Oakland. Walter is probably going to get cut.

Charlie Frye is expected to compete with Bruce Gradkowski for the Raiders No. 3 quarterback job.
Andrew Walter is expected to be released before training camp. Gradkowski has a head start with quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett, so Frye may have to outplay him this summer. The Raiders better hope Jeff Garcia stays healthy.

The Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski battle for the No. 3 QB job is in a dead heat.
This wasn’t the quarterback competition that people predicted heading into Raiders camp. Jeff Garcia hasn’t pushed JaMarcus Russell at all. Meanwhile, there’s two games left in the Clipboard Bowl between Frye and Gradkowski.

Coach Tom Cable said Monday that the Raiders are considering starting Charlie Frye at quarterback in Week 11.
Frye has three appearances since 2006. The former third-round pick holds a career record of 6-14, YPA of 6.1, and 16-25 TD to INT ratio. He may be a better option than JaMarcus Russell, but definitely isn’t a long-term solution. Frye could get the nod because Bruce Gradkowski has a hamstring injury.

Charlie Frye completed 26-of-45 passes for 333 yards, no TDs, and three interceptions as the Raiders fell to Cleveland in Week 16.
He’s better than JaMarcus Russell, but that’s not saying much. Frye did move the ball effectively against Cleveland’s lowly defense, showing plenty of arm strength in the intermediate range but wildly erratic accuracy. It wouldn’t be an awful idea for the Raiders to see what J.P. Losman has in Week 17.

Coach Tom Cable announced Wednesday that Charlie Frye will be Oakland’s starting quarterback in Week 15 against Denver.
Barring the conversion to left tackle we’ve been pulling for two years running, JaMarcus Russell’s time in Oakland is nearing its end. Look for him to be waived in the offseason. Frye, of course, has no chance of success against a Broncos defense that ranks No. 2 against the pass and seventh in the league in sacks. Avoid Raiders skill players in Week 15...and 16...and 17 too.
