Lions signed San Jose State TE Derrick Deese Jr.
The son of former 49ers OL Derrick Deese Sr., Deese Jr. (6'3/244) spent two years in community college before transferring to San Jose State in 2018. After a redshirt year, he amassed an 86-1,149-11 line in three seasons with the Spartans including a breakout 730-yard campaign in 2021. Not invited to the Combine, Deese ran a 4.93 40 with a 31-inch vertical and 10-foot broad jump at his Pro Day. Deese could make some noise as a contested-catch option at the next level, but he is unlikely to develop into a volume receiver. He does have enough upside as a blocker to stick in the league.
