Gary Banks will be pushed by undrafted rookies Jeremy Williams, Seyi Ajirotutu and Ernest Smith for the Chargers’ final WR spot.
The Chargers will have to deal with Vincent Jackson’s looming suspension early in the season, and there is an opening for the team’s No. 5 receiver position. Banks has spent the last two seasons on the practice squad.
  • LAC Wide Receiver
    Chargers released WR Gary Banks.
Banks was just a camp body. Chargers also released LB Eric Bakhtiari, LB Darry Beckwith, CB Simeon Castille, T Corey Clark, DE Andre Coleman, TE Charles Davis, G Ray Feinga, DE Keith Grennan, LB James Holt, DT Rashaad Jackson, FB Billy Latsko, WR Charly Martin, C Ryan McDonald, RB Kestahn Moore, DL Ian Scott, OL L.J. Shelton, CB Antonio Smith, P Truman Spencer and TE Kory Sperry.
  • LAC Wide Receiver
Chargers signed WR Gary Banks, LB Darry Beckwith, CB Simeon Castille, OT Corey Clark, DE Andre Coleman, LB James Holt, FB Billy Latsko, and C Ryan McDonald to their practice squad.
Banks was productive in preseason games, but the Bolts are still hoping the light flips on for 2007 first-round pick Buster Davis and went with him instead. Beckwith is an option at inside linebacker if injuries strike later on.
  • DET Running Back
Chargers signed RB Eldra Buckley, OLB Eric Bakhtiari, WR Gary Banks, DE Andre Coleman, G Brandyn Dombrowski, CB Grant Mason, NT Ogemdi Nwagbou, and CB DeJuan Tribble to reserve/future contracts.
Buckley has spent the last two seasons on the practice squad. Tribble, a mid-round pick last April, might have the best shot here of hanging around. He is a good tackler and the Bolts will likely play a lot of zone next year.
  • FA Wide Receiver
With Legedu Naanee (hamstring) expected to miss Sunday’s game at Houston, Seyi Ajirotutu and Gary Banks will be the Chargers’ second and third receivers.
Ajirotutu is shaping up as a possible sleeper option this week for those owners facing severe bye-week crunches. The Texans’ secondary allows the second-most fantasy points to opposing receivers, and Ajirotutu is a good bet for 5+ targets in the deep-threat role.
  • TEN Tackle
    Chargers cut OT Adam Terry.
Terry, who is just about out of gas, was replaced on the active roster by WR Gary Banks. Jeromey Clary remains the Bolts’ starting RT while Brandyn Dombrowski fills in as a backup.
  • LAC Wide Receiver
Chargers signed WR Gary Banks off their practice squad.
He’ll be San Diego’s No. 4 receiver Sunday, behind Patrick Crayton, Craig Davis, and Seyi Ajirotutu. Banks went undrafted out of Troy in 2008 and has bounced around, spending most of his time on the Bolts’ practice squad.
  • LAC Defensive Back
Chargers signed S Pat Watkins and waived WR Gary Banks.
The 27-year-old Watkins has a long history of racking up special teams tackles, so he could help the Chargers’ woeful coverage units. Banks lost out on a spot to Seyi Ajirotutu, but could resurface on the practice squad.
  • LAC Wide Receiver
Chargers waived WR Gary Banks, LB Darry Beckwith, OG Lee Grimes, and RB Marcus Mason.
The surprise is that Mason was sent packing before Curtis Brinkley, though Brinkley is almost certain to be among San Diego’s final cuts. Beckwith became expendable when Antwan Applewhite was moved to inside ‘backer. Banks, on the practice squad in 2009, was outplayed by undrafted rookies.
  • PHI Wide Receiver
Undrafted rookie Jeremy Williams is “pulling away” in the battle for the Chargers’ fifth-receiver job.
With Vincent Jackson still unsigned, Josh Reed and Buster Davis are the third and fourth receivers. Williams has been head and shoulders above Gary Banks and UFA Seyi Ajirotutu. Williams wouldn’t have gone undrafted had he not showed up to the Combine with a torn labrum in his shoulder.
