Aldon Smith can play pending further developments

Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith eventually could face another suspension based on a trio of misdemeanor charges officially filed against him on Friday. But that suspension isn’t expected to be imposed any time soon.

Per a league source, Smith won’t be placed on paid leave. The league could impose discipline before his legal case is resolved. It’s unclear at this point how the process will unfold.

It is clear that Smith is free to practice with and play for the Raiders pending further developments. Last year, he was suspended nine games for combined violations of the substance-abuse policy and the Personal Conduct Policy.

Smith currently faces charges of DUI with prior conviction and refusal to submit to chemical test, hit-and-run and vandalism.
