With running back Giovani Bernard out for the season and wide receiver A.J. Green’s status up in the air, the Bengals need all the offensive help they can find.

And while he might not be able to help immediately, they’re hoping running back Cedric Peerman can provide some.

The Bengals announced that Peerman would be their designated for return player from injured reserve, meaning cornerback William Jackson III will not come back this season.

Peerman’s back to practice today, and they have a three-week window to determine whether to put him back on the active roster. Peerman suffered a broken arm in the preseason, but using the DFR spot on him suggests they think he can help them down the stretch, and also indicates how desperate they are for some juice on offense.

And considering the fact they’re only a game and a half out of first place in the AFC North, it’s probably worth it.
