The Broncos completed the President’s Day Massacre by dropping six players. The moves helped the team avoid, as we calculated last night, more than $6 million in base salary obligations for 2009. But a league source tells us that the net savings against the 2009 cap exceeded $20 million. The bulk of the savings came from defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, who was due to receive $16 million in bonuses and salary in 2009. The release of linebacker Niko Koutovides resulted in a net cap gain of $1,061,000. Linebacker Jamie Winborn was due to pocket a total of $2.25 million in 2009; since there’s no associated cap acceleration with his release, the team saves all of it. Safety Marquand Manuel’s release frees up a net cap savings of $1.166 million. Cutting defensive tackle end John Engelberger creates $1.164 million in 2009 cap space. Losing tight end Nate Jackson resulted in $557,000 in net cap savings.
