The Chargers added an eight-time Pro Bowler to the roster, just in time to face the Steelers tonight.

The team announced they had activated tight end Antonio Gates today, after he spent the first four games suspended for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

That should be an obvious boost for a 2-2 team which has quarterback Philip Rivers playing some of his best football already.

Gates is one touchdown reception short of 100, and if he gets it tonight (or, whenever, really) he’ll be just the second tight end and ninth player all-time with that distinction.

To make room for him on the roster, the Chargers waived safety Adrian Phillips.
