Chargers coach Norv Turner may be coaching for his job tonight against the Chiefs, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Turner came out doing what he does best: He called a great first series on offense as San Diego marched down the field and scored on its opening possession.
Unfortunately for Chargers fans, it also shouldn’t be surprising that after the Chargers opened the game with a seven-play, 80-yard touchdown-scoring drive, then followed that up with a 12-play, 71-yard, field goal-scoring drive, Turner’s team has struggled to put the Chiefs away.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers threw away a golden opportunity when Chiefs safety Eric Berry picked him off in the end zone just before halftime, and Chargers punt returner Eric Weddle cost San Diego a possession when he muffed a punt that the Chiefs recovered. Mistakes like that have plagued the Chargers all season, and tonight is no different.
Kansas City hasn’t been able to get much going offensively, either, and as a result the Chargers took a 10-6 lead into the fourth quarter. If the Chargers blow this one, it may be the last quarter of Turner’s head-coaching career.
