The Ravens know that they will be without tight end Nick Boyle for the first 10 games next season due to Boyle’s second suspension for violating the league’s performance enhancing drug policy and they have injury questions about one of their other players at the position.
Crockett Gillmore finished the season on injured reserve because of a back injury and he was also bothered by a shoulder injury while catching 33 passes in 10 appearances for the team. On Wednesday, General Manager Ozzie Newsome said that Gillmore will need to hit the operating room as a result.
“He’s having to have some surgeries done,” Newsome said, via the team’s website. “Hopefully he’ll be ready to go when training camp comes around, but that determination will be made by our doctors and our trainers.”
Boyle’s suspension and Gillmore’s injuries leave Maxx Williams as the surest thing at tight end for the Ravens heading into next season. That could help Dennis Pitta’s chances of sticking with the team as he tries to resume his career, although Pitta’s own injury history likely means they’ll need other options if he does remain in Baltimore.
Newsome also updated the status of 2015 first-round pick Breshad Perriman, who missed the entire season with a knee injury. Perriman has yet to be cleared for football activities, but Newsome said he expects the wide receiver on the field during offseason workouts.
