On Wednesday, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross vowed to look into the pre-draft interview of Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant, who was asked by G.M. Jeff Ireland whether Bryant’s mother was a prostitute. On Friday, Ross declared the matter closed.
“We are going to take a hard look at our interview practices and we will make improvements that will allow us to get the important information we need about players in who we are making a major investment, but without being insensitive,” Ross said in a statement, per Jorge Milian of the Palm Beach Post.
As to Ireland, Ross said that the third-year G.M. is “a man of great capability and integrity,” and that he deserves the franchise’s “continued confidence.”
Frankly, we’ve heard that same assessment from many league insiders. That said, we continue to believe that the team’s decision to leak a somewhat implausible version of the events was unfortunate, and misguided. In our view, Ross should be even more troubled by that development than by the original question.
