Saints coach Sean Payton said early this week that he was optimistic about quarterback Drew Brees’s chances of returning to the lineup to face the Cowboys in Week Four.
It doesn’t sound like Brees’s work at Wednesday’s practice will do anything to put a damper on that optimism. Brees, who is dealing with a right shoulder injury, said that he took most of the reps with the first-team during the session and that he shares Payton’s optimism about playing this weekend.
“Felt good. Made progress,” Brees said, via the New Orleans Advocate. “Felt a lot better, obviously today, than I did last week. Getting a little bit better every day, so hopefully increased reps as the week goes on, but I feel good about Sunday.”
Brees said last Wednesday that he had “every intention” of playing against the Panthers, so there’s still time for things to take a turn in the other direction. Whichever way things are leaning, Brees said that he wants to have a decision by Friday in order to give Luke McCown as much notice that he’ll be starting again as possible.
