Environmental groups move against downtown L.A. stadium

Last year, Ed Roski and company managed to finagle a law that exempted the proposed football stadium in the City of Industry from laws relating to the environmental review of the impact of the construction. With a new proposal emerging for an alternative structure in downtown Los Angeles, environmental groups hope to block similar legislative hocus pocus.

Patrick McGreevy of the Los Angeles Times reports that 72 different environmental groups have launched an effort aimed at forcing a full review of the project backed by Tim Leiweke and Casey Wasserman.

In Roski’s case, the law mooted a legal challenge to the environmental review that had been conducted. In this case, no environmental review has even occurred. Still, basic fairness suggests that, if Roski’s group managed sweetheart treatment under the guise of bringing millions of dollars and thousands of jobs into the region, the downtown proposal should get the same consideration.

In this regard, Roski’s group surely would disagree. Many already view the downtown plan as superior to Roski’s, even though Roski has everything he needs to build the venue, with the exception of a team.

So look for Roski to tap into the same resources that helped secure the legislative gratuity last year in the hopes of blocking a similar gift for Leiweke and Wasserman.
