Jermaine Lewis was a two-time All-Pro return man and a Super Bowl hero for the Ravens, but his post-NFL life has not gone well.
The 37-year-old Lewis was arrested Thursday in Baltimore County for driving on a suspended license, his second arrest in the last six months. The police report for the latest arrest paints a picture of a man whose life is bleak.
“He advised that he was driving because his wife was in jail and that he needed to get food for his son and something to heat his home,” the report states, according to the Baltimore Sun. “Defendant Lewis then pointed to a fire starter log in the front passenger seat of the vehicle.”
Police say Lewis’s 4-year-old son was in the front seat, unrestrained by a car seat or seat belt.
Lewis is scheduled to go on trial in May for his previous arrest, when he was charged with driving recklessly and resisting arrest.
In his nine-year NFL career, Lewis twice led the league in punt return touchdowns. He had 152 all-purpose yards and a touchdown in the Ravens’ Super Bowl win over the Giants. Lewis signed a five-year, $16 million contract with the Ravens in 1998 and a three-year, $3 million contract with the Jaguars in 2003.
