With swine flu dominating the public-health discussion, the issue of staph infections in pro football has taken a back seat.
And Greater Cleveland appreciates that fact.
But staph is back in the headlines; Saints linebacker Scott Fujita had emergency surgery to clean a staph infection out of his knee.
“I’m feeling much better after the operation,” Fujita said, per the New Orleans Times Picayune. “I can’t even describe how bummed out I am. But I feel way better than I have in the last week.”
The infection resulted from a ruptured bursa sac in Fujita’s knee. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning developed a staph infection in similar fashion late in the 2008 offseason.
It’s unclear when the surgery was performed; as of Friday, Fujita was listed as probable, which means that at the time the team believed it was virtually certain Fujita would play.
