The Cardinals have been preparing for the regular season on the field at training camp and they’ve been busy in the front office as well.
They agreed to contract extensions with safety Tyrann Mathieu, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and quarterback Carson Palmer, making it likelier that the latter two veterans will end their careers in Arizona. On Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reported that they have also converted $6 million of left tackle Jared Veldheer’s base salary into a bonus that pushes $4 million of his cap hit into the next two seasons.
The restructure gives the Cardinals some extra cap space to work with this season, something that can come in handy if they need to make a move to replace an injured player or otherwise add to their depth. During a Monday appearance on Arizona Sports 98.7, coach Bruce Arians also said that the team had three or four other players they’d like to extend.
Linebacker Chandler Jones, defensive end Calais Campbell and wide receiver Michael Floyd may be in that group and getting all the deals done may be a bridge too far, but it certainly doesn’t appear the Cardinals’ contract team will be taking time off anytime soon.
