Jerry Gray close to escaping the ‘Skins

Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray, once regarded as a member of the short list for NFL head-coaching jobs, is close to getting a crack at wearing the whistle, but at the college level.

As John Taylor of CFT points out, multiple reports indicate that Gray will become the next head coach at Memphis.

LSU assistant coach Larry Porter also is under consideration for the job.

Both men are African-American; coupled with last week’s decision by Western Kentucky to hire Stanford assistant Willie Taggart, the Memphis move will result in two new minority coaches at NCAA football programs, a dramatic development in an era featuring supposedly liberal university presidents who largely have been doing their best Al Campanis impersonation.
