Joe Philbin: We are what we are right now

The Dolphins were pasted 41-14 by the Bills on Sunday afternoon, dropping them to 1-2 on the young season and raising the pressure on coach Joe Philbin to figure out how to get his team moving in the right direction after an offseason that created some high expectations in Miami.

Philbin was short on answers after the game. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that Philbin started his postgame press conference by saying “it starts with me” before moving on to an admission that he’s not a magician.

“We are what we are right now,” Philbin said. “We’ll look at everything we’re doing. If I had a magic potion, I would have brought it out earlier. ... We are either going to stick together or not. ... We don’t have anyone to blame. There’s nobody to blame.”

Those aren’t satisfying responses nor is saying that he needs to “look at the tape to see what happened today” when asked about his team’s effort level. He really doesn’t, though. His team was routed in every possible way for 60 minutes by a divisional rival in their home opener, something that should be more than enough to know that the effort, execution and planning was nowhere near good enough.

There’s an old saying about poker that says if you don’t know who the sucker at the table is, it’s probably you. The same could be said of Philbin’s inability to find someone to blame for Sunday’s loss.
