Lions say workout was just one step in evaluating Pacman

The Detroit Lions have confirmed that they’re interested in free agent cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones. But they say that watching him work out on Friday was just the first step in considering whether they’d actually offer him a contract.

Lions VP of pro personnel Sheldon White made the trip to New Orleans to watch Jones work out, and Lions coach Jim Schwartz said that White thought Jones ran well. But that only confirms that Jones has stayed in decent shape. It doesn’t mean the Lions have decided they want him.

“The one thing you want to look at is what kind of condition he’s in, what he’s been doing,” Schwartz said, per the Detroit Free Press. “If he’s not in very good condition, then obviously, it’s not important for him to get back. But if he’s in good condition, if he’s ready to go, then that’s part of that evaluation.”

Schwartz was the Titans’ defensive coordinator in 2005 and 2006, when Jones was a starting cornerback who played well for Tennessee. That might make the Lions want to give Jones a chance.

On the other hand, Schwartz was also the Titans’ defensive coordinator in 2007, when Jones’ off-field problems forced him to miss the entire season. That might make the Lions think Jones is more trouble than he’s worth.

Schwartz says it’s too early to say whether the Lions’ interest in Pacman is serious enough to bring him on board: “There’s more than needs to be done, and if we cross that bridge, that will be an organizational decision.”
