Matt Jones and Cleo Lemon will have to wait for contract

The Titans had a quartet of veterans work out for the team Thursday, including quarterback Cleo Lemon and wide receiver Matt Jones.

G.M. Mike Reinfeldt made it clear in comments after the workout that no signings are coming soon. Wide receivers Jerry Porter and Samie Parker were also at the workout.

“They’re guys we have interest in and guys with certain skills we wanted to see. But I don’t see anything happening right now,” Reinfeldt said.

Lemon might have largely been there to throw to the receiver tryouts, and to put his name atop the Titans’ “emergency list” at quarterback.

"[Lemon] was more of a guy we just wanted to see throw,” Reinfeldt said. “We heard some good things about him and now we can say we saw first hand.”

The Tennessean reports that Jones and Parker were the most impressive players at the workout, which leaves Porter trailing behind. (Not a surprise for anyone that saw him run routes last year.)

D.J. Hackett and Kelley Washington also outplayed Porter at a workout for the Ravens earlier this summer, which may be a sign that Porter’s NFL career is coming to an end. (We’ll always have his nine-touchdown season in 2004 to share with our grandkids.)

Jones, meanwhile, will likely have to wait to continue his career. Teams may be more interested in him after Week One, when his contract for the rest of the year would no longer be guaranteed.
