Matt Light working on a deal to join ESPN
Speculation about Matt Light’s retirement dragged out through the winter and spring. But once summer vacation’s over, he’s about to be back in football in a new capacity.
As Alper mentioned in the one-liners this morning, the former Patriots left tackle said he was near a deal to join ESPN’s sizable stable of former player/analysts, according to Tom Archdeacon of the Dayton Daily News.
“I’m working with ESPN right now trying to finalize a contract,” Light said. “I want to see how that goes. Football has been a big part of my life - for the majority of my life - and the TV stuff would help me keep one foot in the door of that world and have some fun with it, too.”
The 11-year starter was known as one of the brightest players and best with the media during his time with the Patriots, so the transition should be a smooth one.
Anyone who’s covered an NFL team knows that within the locker room, going to the blockers is often the easiest path to actual insight, so we’re looking forward to seeing what Light brings to a profession that’s leaned more toward “look-at-me” and less toward analysis in recent years.
