When the Vikings drafted him, Moritz Böhringer became the only NFL player who made it straight to the league from European football. And now Böhringer has another distinction: He’s the only NFL player with an umlaut on his jersey.
The Vikings announced today that Böhringer has received approval from the NFL to add the umlaut over the ‘o’ in his last name on his jersey. We’ve previously been spelling his last name as “Boehringer,” but he actually spells it Böhringer.
The umlaut is commonly used in German, but it’s best known in the United States to fans of Mötley Crüe and Spın̈al Tap.
Böhringer will join Washington receiver Pierre Garçon, who is of Haitian decent and has a cédille under the c in his name on his jersey, as a rare NFL player with a special character on his jersey.
