Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson sat out the first quarter of last Sunday’s game against the Dolphins in what the team called a “coach’s decision” and what reports said was a disciplinary action due to repeated lateness to/absences from team activities.
One report had Wilkerson missing a walkthrough and defensive meeting (with birthday cake) before the Jets played the Ravens in Week Seven. Wilkerson admitted to both missing the walkthrough and being late to meetings when he met with the media on Wednesday and called it “unacceptable” behavior.
“I won’t be a distraction,” Wilkerson said, via Kimberley Martin of Newsday. “I feel like this is a distraction to the team. There won’t be a distraction coming from me. I definitely have to do better and show better. ... That’s not me, that’s not my character, that’s not me as a teammate.”
Wilkerson did not practice on Wednesday as he continues to deal with the ankle injury that kept him from playing in the aforementioned Ravens game, but it would seem he’ll be back in his old role if healthy based on coach Todd Bowles calling him one of the team’s leaders during his media session.
