NFL won’t comment on Cameron Heyward “Ironhead” fine

The NFL would like the Cameron Heyward fine controversy to go away quietly.

Heyward, the Steelers defensive lineman and son of the late NFL running back Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, has been honoring his father by writing “Iron” on the eyeblack under one eye and “Head” on the eyeblack under the other eye. That runs afoul of the NFL’s rules against players displaying personal messages during games, and Heyward was fined for it.

But this week, the NFL refused to say whether Heyward is still being fined. All the league would say was, “we are not commenting further on the matter.” Usually the league is willing to confirm whether or not a player has been fined for violating league rules.

That comes after a report that Heyward agreed to stop writing the messages after the NFL reduced his fines. It appears that the league and Heyward have quietly settled and agreed to stop talking about it.

Craig Heyward, a Pro Bowl running back who spent time with the Saints, Bears, Falcons, Rams and Colts, died of cancer in 2006.
