No word on whether Warner will pay back signing bonus money

As the press conference during which Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner announced his retirement on Friday, no mention was made regarding the matter of a $15 million signing bonus he received in 2009, as part of a two-year deal.

It’s a clear case under the CBA; he owes $7.5 million.

It’s possible that he was paid only $7.5 million in 2009, and that the rest is due to be paid in 2010. Technically, however, he earned the money the moment he signed the contract. Unless he relinquishes his right to receive it, the Cardinals would have to take steps to secure the ability to never pay the money.

And that most likely would require the Cardinals to file a grievance within 45 days.

So stay tuned.
