Because the Packers selected linebacker Nick Perry in the first round of the 2012 draft, they could have exercised an option in his contract to hold onto him for a fifth year.
The Packers opted not to do that last year, but Perry will be remaining in Green Bay all the same. Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Perry has re-signed with the Packers for one year at $5 million.
That’s $2.75 million less than the Packers would have had to pay under the terms of the option, which means the market played out well for the team.
Perry, who is No. 79 on PFT’s list of the top free agents in 2016, has had a hard time staying healthy during his time with the Packers and has missed 18 games since joining the team. He’s only missed three of them the last two seasons, though, and flashed the kind of pass rushing production that’s been missing from much of his career with 3.5 sacks in two playoff games last season.
Keeping that up would mean more playing time for Perry, although he should have a prominent role in run defense however things play out on that front.
