RAIDERS TALKING TO AL SAUNDERS

Former Rams offensive coordinator Al Saunders is set to interview with the Raiders. Although one can never say for sure what Al Davis is planning, it is believed that he’s being considered for the coordinator position and not the head coaching job. Saunders and Davis have met before. In 2006, Saunders was a candidate for the head coaching job that eventually went to Art Shell. “We anticipate giving him an interview within the next day or two,” Raiders senior executive John Herrera said Tuesday. Saunders was an offensive assistant with the Chargers from 1983-86 and the team’s head coach from 1986-88. He was also a Chiefs assistant from 1989-98 and 2001-05. The Rams averaged a modest 287 yards per game in 2008, though that was still 15 more than the Raiders could muster. The Raiders scored two more points per game, however. Lane Kiffin and Cable called the plays, not offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, in 2008. It remains to be seen who will do the playcalling next season if Cable retains the job. UPDATE: As several readers pointed out, Knapp did call plays for a stretch after Kiffin was fired but Cable eventually relieved him of those duties.
