Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata enjoyed a terrific 2010 campaign, with his third place finish in PFT’s Alan Page award surely the highlight.

Ngata’s 2011 is off to a solid start after the Ravens placed their franchise tag on him Tuesday.

“The tender allows us to secure Haloti as a Raven right now,” said Ravens G.M. Ozzie Newsome. “As we have said, our intention is to enter into a long-term contract with him. We want him to be a Raven.”

The Ravens ultimately signed previous franchise tag recipients Chris McAlister and Terrell Suggs to long-term deals. That’s what’s likely to happen with Ngata.

In the meantime, Ngata is slated to make more than $12 million in 2011. That’s more than $5 million than the tag number from last year.
