The NFL is good at many things, but the league’s number one skill remains extracting money from others.
On Tuesday, the Redskins received approval from the Prince George’s County Council to sell advertising in their parking lots.
That’s right, naming rights for the parking lot.
Other businesses in the county are not allowed to have advertising in their parking areas, according to a story in the Washington Post.
The measure was passed by a unanimous vote “on a day when the council was rushing to complete a packed agenda before it recesses for six weeks.” According to a spokesman for County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, the county will receive no money for the deal.
No kidding.
Redskins spokesman Tony Wylie, bless his heart, said the chief purpose was to improve “wayfinding.”
I guess that sounds nicer than saying “squeezing every last drop of blood out of this thing we can.”
Hey, we’re all trying to cut the best deal for ourselves that we can. The rest of us, however, don’t have municipalities willing to bend over backward for the privilege of assisting us in the endeavor.
