Wide receiver Reggie Wayne didn’t play a snap in the regular season this year and he says that he won’t be trying to play any in the future either.
Wayne was released by the Patriots before the start of the regular season and the longtime Colt never resurfaced anywhere else before the year was out. He told Mike Chappell of CBS4 in Indianapolis that there won’t be a comeback attempt in 2016.
“I think so, bro, yeah,” Wayne said. “Yeah, I’m done. It was fun, but it’s time. It’s just time. Whenever you can admit that you’re done, you know you’re done.”
Wayne said that the realization that his career was over came when he attended the Colts’ victory over the Buccaneers in late November. Wayne said he’d “turned into a fan, a real fan” and that it sunk in that a fan’s role would be the only one he’s playing.
“I thought that was the final notch for me,” Wayne said. “I felt like I needed that to help get me over that hump. A lot of guys who go to games come away and say, ‘You know what? I can still do that.’ But I needed that to realize, ‘You know what? This ain’t half bad.’”
Wayne ends his career in seventh place all-time in receptions with 1,070, eighth place in receiving yards with 14,345 and 23rd in receiving touchdowns with 82. He was named an Associated Press first-team All-Pro in 2010, was selected to six Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl ring with the Colts.
