Report: Ruston Webster could be out in Tennessee

The man who made Marcus Mariota the second pick in the draft could be out of a job in roughly three weeks.

Titans G.M. Ruston Webster is “far from safe,” according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

With coach Ken Whisenhunt already out, a decision to oust Wesbter wouldn’t be a shock. As an unnamed high-ranking Titans official pointed out to Rapoport, the team has won only five games in the past two years.

Still, drafting Mariota should count for something, shouldn’t it? Not in today’s NFL, especially when the Titans could be in position to attract a big-name coach to work with Mariota. Most big-name coaches will want to control personnel or to install their own, hand-picked person to do so.

Discussing the report on NFL GameDay First, Rapoport dropped a wire brush on the drum PFT has been banging since the moment the Titans drafted Mariota: Clearing out Webster could make it easier to attract Eagles coach Chip Kelly.

All it takes is a phone call from Nashville to Philly after both teams’ seasons end. That flick of the first domino could trigger a chain reaction that results in a reunion that would make the Titans competitive -- and, more importantly, relevant.
