The Patriots have reached a deal with a potential free agent.
The club has extended the contract of backup offensive lineman Marcus Cannon for two more seasons, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday.
According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Cannon received a $3.2 million signing bonus. The total value of the deal, which now runs through 2015, is up to $9 million, per the Herald.
The 26-year-old Cannon started the first three games of the season at left guard but has been a backup since. The club lists him as the top reserve at both tackle spots as well as left guard.
Cannon was the final year of his four-year rookie contract. A TCU product, Cannon was a fifth-round pick three years ago. He has made a successful recovery from a 2011 lymphoma diagnosis.
