Mike Shanahan doesn’t have to insinuate anything: For now, Rex Grossman is atop the Redskins depth chart at quarterback.

Perhaps it’s just a recognition that John Beck isn’t fully healthy at the moment. Perhaps it’s just a nod to the fact Grossman ended last year as the starter.

While the first preseason game depth chart isn’t that big a deal, the designation is a sign that Beck’s status as Week One starter may not be 100% decided just yet. Even if we still see him as the heavy favorite.

Some other noteworthy nuggets from the depth chart.

1. Jabar Gaffney is listed as the starting wideout opposite Santana Moss. Anthony Armstrong and rookie Leonard Hankerson are second teamers. We’re not sure how No. 2-4 will shake out, but this looks like the top four receivers for Washington. Donte Stallworth is on the third team.

2. Tim Hightower is the starting running back. Washington will have done well picking up a starting wideout and running back via trade in camp. Ryan Torain is listed last because he’s hurt again already. Rookie Roy Helu is listed No. 2 and is someone to watch closely in fantasy leagues.

3. Redskins veterans Mike Sellers, Malcolm Kelly, and H.B. Blades are all buried on the depth chart. They may not make the team. Kelly is almost certain to get cut; he’s hurt again.
