Early in his press conference Tuesday, Jets coach Rex Ryan was talking about the switch from quarterback Mark Sanchez to Greg McElroy.
“Where the team is now, I think it’s best for our team,” Ryan said. “I truly believe I think it’s best for our team right now. That’s how I feel about it.”
That’s a short way of saying that with playoff chances eliminated and Sanchez coming off a five-turnover game, there’s nothing to lose in the short term.
Ryan apparently wasn’t thinking about the long-term, because he talked around questions about Sanchez’s future.
When asked why McElroy wasn’t considered when the playoffs were still a possibility, he said: “I’m not going to get into all the other particulars.”
Ryan said he didn’t know yet whether Sanchez or Tim Tebow would be McElory’s backup Sunday. He said he told Sanchez the news last night, but didn’t decide who to start this week against the Chargers until this morning, after “a lot of conversations,” with members of his staff.
