Last week, Ryan Glasspiegel of TheBigLead.com asked whether Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has developed a habit of subtweeting management in connection with his contract talks. Here’s the tweet that sparked that hypothesis: “Just bc some people want you to slow down & not dream big doesn’t mean u should decrease ur Volume & Relentless Ambition.”
Here’s Wilson’s latest, from earlier today: “Always control what you can control. Never let others nonsense & lack of gratefulness & respect bring you down. #BestIsAhead.”
It’s hard not to wonder whether this relates to Wilson’s slowly ongoing negotiations with the Seahawks, especially since his first apparent subtweet came just after coach Pete Carroll told ESPN that the ball is in Wilson’s court: “I’d rather patiently wait & see what God has in store than do something that isn’t best for my life.”
Who else would Wilson be complaining about regarding “lack of gratefulness & respect” at a time when his employer has yet to make Wilson a contractual offer he’s willing to accept? More importantly, if Wilson isn’t talking about the Seahawks at a time when he’s negotiating a new contract with them, why would he post a general tweet without making it clear that he’s not talking about the Seahawks?
Some are suggesting that Wilson’s subtweet is directed not to the Seahawks but to teammate Bruce Irvin. And that’s the problem with subtweets; since they don’t identify the subject of criticism, more people than the intended target can end up getting offended by the message sent.
