Cornerback Shawntae Spencer has spent eight seasons in San Francisco, primarily as a starter. The team thought enough of him in 2006 to hand him a six-year contract.
Spencer’s tenure with the team is about up.
Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports the 49ers are in the process of allowing Spencer seek a trade. He’s due $3 million next season and there’s no way the 49ers will pay that after burying him on the bench late last season.
Don’t expect the 49ers to find any takers. Spencer is 30 years old and there are a lot of good cornerbacks available this offseason. Teams know San Francisco will cut him, so they may as well wait for that to happen.
Spencer switched agents this offseason. He said that his former agent David Dunn had a conflict of interest because of close ties to 49ers G.M. Trent Baalke and coach Jim Harbaugh.
