49ers coach Mike Singletary’s vote of confidence for Jimmy Raye on Sunday turned into a Monday morning firing of the team’s offensive coordinator.
So what happened in between?
According to Singletary, the coach just watched some film. And then he made a decision to get rid of Raye with absolutely no outside input.
“One thing I want you to understand is if I make a decision, it’s my decision. The thing that I have control over is the 53 man staff, the 53 man roster and the staff, who is on my coaching staff. That is my decision,” Singletary said.
It will prove to be one of the most important decisions of Singletary’s coaching career. He said he made the decision by feel.
“I’ve looked at the film, obviously, I’ve looked at every game we’ve played a few times, but when you’re searching for an answer, sometimes you can look at it in a different way, and you’re looking for something specific and it’s really difficult to put your finger on, but you see it, and it’s hard to describe, but it’s there,” Singletary said. “So I just think that after looking at the film and thinking about it, praying about it, that’s the decision that I came to.”
In a shaky NFC West, Singletary has time to turn things around. The 49ers coach lauded new offensive coordinator Mike Johnson’s “vision.” Singletary has to show that he has vision of his own, and that his gut feelings are worth following.
