Saints safety Darren Sharper’s free-agency tour has been derailed. By a scalpel.
Fletcher Mackel of WSDU-TV reports that Sharper arrived Monday night at a party for the premiere of the Saints’ 2009 DVD on crutches. He said that he underwent a procedure to “clean out his left knee.”
The surgery was performed last week in in Birmingham by Dr. James Andrews.
Sharper declined to say whether he has visited other teams; NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reports via Twitter that Sharper will not be able to make visits in in immediate future.
The decision to undergo surgery two days before the start of free agency is confusing, unless of course Sharper’s agent knew that there would be no interest in Sharper during the first wave of free agency -- or unless Sharper had a limp that he would not be plausibly be able to attribute to his leg falling asleep.
Sharper told Mackel that he remains positive about the possibility of returning to the Saints, who declined to apply the franchise tag or the transition tag to the unrestricted free agent.
