Giants coach Tom Coughlin deserves to be paid among the richest coaches in the NFL. Apparently, he will be.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that Coughlin’s new three-year deal (which is a two-year extension to his existing contract) will pay $20 million over three years.
The $6.67 million annual average, based on a recent report from Forbes, puts Coughlin close to the $7 million W-2 filed by guys like Rams coach Jeff Fisher and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan. Pats coach Bill Belichick is believed to be the king of the coaching cash hill, at $7.5 million per year.
In our view, Coughlin deserves Belichick money. But the reality is that Coughlin had one year to go in order to become a coaching free agent. Another 9-7 regular season, possibly with no playoff appearance, would have softened the market, considerably.
Then there’s the very strong possibility that he’s not interested in chasing top dollar elsewhere. He has made a lot of money in his career, he’ll make a lot more, and the only question is how many generations of Coughlin kin will be spending it.
