To get into the Super Bowl, the media covering the game had to walk past the nice man carrying a machine gun, through a labyrinth of security lines, under a metal detector, then wait for the bomb-sniffing dog to check our computer bags, before passing by a handful of people eyeballing and bar-code scanning credentials.
And yet again, somebody snuck in without paying.
Via Andrew Joseph of the Arizona Republic, a pair of Irish fans broke in and found themselves on the fourth row of the most heavily-secured game of the year.
Paul McEvoy and Richard Whelan told RTE Radio One Morning Ireland that they made their way in with the old “clipboard and a confident wave” strategy.
“We just thought if we pretend we belong there, nobody will question us,” Whelan said. “Between one layer of security and another we just walked in behind these 20 first aid workers, straight up to the front door and hid in behind them.
“Paul was looking at his phone, pretending to text me, as if we had just popped out to look at an email we got or something,” he said. “We walked past another security guard that just wasn’t paying attention. We could see the field then, the stadium and the atmosphere was insane.”
No, what’s insane is that year after year, this continues to happen.
