A University of Minnesota product will get a chance to compete for a roster spot with the state’s NFL club.

The Vikings announced the signing of linebacker Simoni Lawrence on Tuesday. The 25-year-old Lawrence played for the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2013, notching 52 tackles and intercepting three passes.

Lawrence (6-1, 228) has had NFL stints with the Buccaneers, Bears, Eagles and Rams. He originally signed with St. Louis in 2010 after two seasons with the Golden Gophers (2008-2009).

Lawrence’s most recent NFL stint came with Tampa Bay in 2011. The Buccaneers waived him in the final round of cuts to 53 players. He played with the UFL’s Las Vegas Locomotives in 2011 and the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos in 2012. Lawrence was traded to Hamilton in 2013.
