Welcome back, football

Sure, we know that it’s not “real” football, with the first regular-season game still a month and a day away. But it sure looks like “real” football from the Seat No. 22 (the Emmitt chair) in the press box at Fawcett Stadium, where the Cowboys and Bengals are in full uniform and warming up for the Hall of Fame game.

The scene reminds me of how great football is, and it makes me more concerned that, next year, this game -- and many others -- may not be played.

So, later, when you pretend that airplane in the night sky is a shooting star, make a wish that the owners and the players will realize that they are stewards of a sacred public trust and that they need to get this labor mess straightened out sooner rather than later. At a minimum, it’ll be a dark cloud over the entire 2010 season. At worst, it’ll deprive us of one of the truly great joys that every August brings.

The return of football.
