Ray Fisher and Brandon James are expected to compete for the Colts’ returner job.
Fisher was a seventh-round pick out of Indiana and James went undrafted from Florida. The Colts are annually below average on kick returns, and Fisher averaged 37.4 yards per return as a senior. James, a speedster, goes just 5'7/176. They’ll both have to beat out Samuel Giguere.
  • IND Defensive Back
Colts waived CB Ray Fisher and DT Marlon Favorite.
Fisher was trying to make the roster as a return man, but couldn’t cut it. Favorite, a journeyman at this point, went undrafted out of LSU in 2009.
  • IND Wide Receiver
Colts RB/KR Brandon James fumbled a punt in his audition for the return job Thursday night.
James not only fumbled, but the Packers also recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Ray Fisher returned one kickoff for 58 yards, likely earning a more extensive look next week. Devin Moore had taken the early lead in the race for both kickoffs and punts, but he was held out of the game with an undisclosed injury.
  • IND Defensive Back
Colts signed seventh-round CB Ray Fisher to a four-year contract, including a $41,500 signing bonus.
A smallish prospect (5'9/172) from nearby Indiana, Fisher is being given a chance along with undrafted rookie Brandon James to be the Colts’ kick return man. He might make the roster that way, but won’t help as a corner.
  • IND Wide Receiver
Undrafted rookie RB Brandon James is expected to battle seventh-round CB Ray Fisher for return duties this summer.
Sam Giguere and Jerraud Powers entered the offseason as favorites for kickoff and punt return duties respectively, but the rookies now appear to have the edge. James combined for six TDs on punt and kick returns at Florida while Fisher averaged 37.4 yards per kickoff return as a senior at Indiana.
