Pewter Report’s Adam Slivon reports that Buccaneers WR Ted Hurst has “looked like the kind of X-receiver that can be an X-Factor this season.”

Please don’t let Slivon’s corny phrasing distract you from the fact that Hurst is playing well in the X-receiver role that the team drafted him to fill. While WR Jalen McMillan (knee) sits out, Hurst is reportedly displaying “amazing body control” while making leaping grabs, effectively “using his 6-foot-4 height to his advantage.” The third-round rookie is a no-brainer dice roll as a late-round draft target. He is not guaranteed to be a hit, but reports continue to be positive, and in-season rookie breakouts are always a big fantasy factor down the stretch.

Pewter Report’s Adam Slivon reports that Buccaneers RB Kenny Gainwell “has emerged as a dynamic receiving back” in training camp.

According to Slivon, Gainwell “has not toted the rock much,” which sounds like good news for RB Bucky Irving’s rushing workload. Slivon believes OC Zac Robinson clearly trusts Gainwell “to turn those plays at or behind the line of scrimmage into bigger gains.” He could have a tough time delivering huge performances if he is only minimally involved in the run game, but in an era where the RB2/FLEX-viable receiving backs are becoming less common, Gainwell may be able to buck that trend.

Saints signed LB Deion Jones, formerly of the Buccaneers.

Jones played 121 defensive snaps in Tampa Bay last season, totaling 20 solo tackles, one TFL and three quarterback pressures. Jones has now been a member of all four NFC South teams. He will presumably settle into a backup role with the Saints in his age-31 season.

Bucs GM Jason Licht said he thinks Baker Mayfield is a franchise quarterback.

If Mayfield is to be believed, the Bucs don’t want to pay him like a franchise passer. Mayfield told ESPN last week that he was offered a two-year deal worth less than $50 million per year by the Bucs. Coming off a down season, Licht apparently wasn’t willing to commit to his supposed franchise quarterback long-term. Now Mayfield will play out the final year of his current contract before becoming a free agent next offseason. If he plays well, expect the Bucs to use the franchise tag to prevent him from leaving.

Bucs GM Jason Licht said he has “no plans” to trade Vita Vea.

Vea was looking for a new contract this offseason and the Bucs have not met his demands. In response, Vea requested a trade and is not currently participating in training camp. The team is calling it a back injury. We’re comfortable assuming it’s a bank issue. Vea can’t realistically hold out during the regular season, meaning he’s going to play football this year, one way or another. Whether that’s in Tampa and on his current contract remains to be seen.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles said Tristan Wirfs (hamstring) is expected to return during the preseason.

Wirfs went down with a hamstring issue during the first week of camp. By the sound of it, he will miss several weeks of practice. For a six-year veteran, that’s not a major issue, as long as he is ready to go by Week 1 and doesn’t suffer any setbacks. Health permitting, the Bucs should have one of the league’s best offensive lines this year.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles said he is not sure how long Jalen McMillan (knee) will be out.

McMillan was one of several Bucs wideouts held out of practice yesterday, but it sounds like the others were largely maintenance days. McMillan, on the other hand, is dealing with a rather mysterious injury, given that we have no timeline for his return. It could ultimately be a minor issue, but his absence in practice will free up reps for rookie Ted Hurst. The two are likely competing for the final starting spot in three-receiver sets. McMillan’s knee issue now has Hurst firmly on the sleeper radar for the remainder of camp.

Buccaneers WR Tez Johnson left Tuesday’s practice early with a groin injury.

Johnson left practice early Tuesday to get treatment for an apparent strain. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said the 24-year-old wideout is dealing with a groin injury. The severity of the injury is unclear as Bowles said it’s too early to tell if any of the team’s top four wide receivers would miss next week’s joint practices with the Jets. Chris Godwin, Emeka Egbuka, and Jalen McMillan also missed practice out of maintenance and precaution. With Johnson and David Sills also exiting practice, rookie Ted Hurst saw a boost in practice reps.

Buccaneers WRs Chris Godwin, Emeka Egbuka, and Jalen McMillan did not practice Tuesday to manage injuries and soreness.

Fox Sports’ Greg Auman reported the three lead Buccaneers receivers got the day off Tuesday. For Godwin, it is a veteran maintenance day as he aims to open the season fully healthy; expect him to see more maintenance days heading into preseason. Egbuka and McMillan are dealing with lower-body soreness and were held out of practice out of precaution. Ultimately, no major injury concerns as the Bucs play it safe with their top three wideouts in training camp.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler believes Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers are “on a collision course for the franchise tag.”

Tampa’s two-year offer to Mayfield was reportedly close to “two years worth of franchise tags,” so it certainly seems like they’re going to do this after the season. Mayfield, entering into his age-32 season in 2027, would then be a potential trade candidate or could negotiate a long-term extension with Buccaneers depending on how this year goes. It does seem like the Bucs don’t really have any intention on letting Mayfield leave despite not extending him.
