Nathan MacKinnon was not expected to play for the Colorado Avalanche in tonight’s exhibition game against the Los Angeles Kings, but was held out of the morning skate due to a hip-flexor injury, according to

MacKinnon was the prized prospect at this year’s NHL Draft, as the Avalanche selected him with the first overall pick.

From the comments of Colorado’s head coach Patrick Roy, it seems this injury was detected early on in training camp and is not serious.

“It’s not something that has surprised us,” Roy told the Denver Post.

“First day when we had medicals the doctor mentioned he might have those problems at the beginning, then he needs to work on stretching. Nothing major, but certainly we don’t want to take any chances.”
