The Detroit Red Wings have locked up forward Luke Glendening to a four-year contract extension worth $7.2 million (AAV of $1.8 million). The 27-year-old had one year remaining on his current deal, which means that this new extension will kick-in at the start of the 2017-18 season. He’s scheduled to make $628,333 this upcoming season. Glendening would have become an unrestricted free agent after next summer.
It’s a nice bump in pay for Glendening, who scored eight goals and a career-high 21 points in 81 games during the 2015-16 campaign.
“If you’d have told me two or three years ago that I’d be sitting here talking abut a four-year extension, I probably would have laughed,” Glendening said, per The Detroit Free Press. “I’m excited to have security of my future for a little bit, but that doesn’t mean you can sit back. You have to keep getting better.”
Like Darren Helm, who re-signed with the Wings on July 1st, Glendening is fast on his skates. He’s also a solid defensive forward, who is a key contributor on the penalty-kill and was also consistently the team’s best face-off man at 54.6 percent. No Red Wings player spent more time on the PK than Glendening last season.
